About Our Church

What Does it Mean to be Evangelical and Free?

How did our international movement get its name? We’re sometimes asked:
“Evangelical Free...is that kinda like sugar-free, or caffeine-free?” We get it,
our name can be confusing! Let's try to clear some of that up:

"Evangelical"

Evangel” means the good news of Jesus Christ. The EFCC’s spiritual ancestors in Scandinavia were dismayed at the moralistic social religion of the state churches into which they were born. Their first question for others was not “Which church do you attend?” Or “What do you believe about_____?”, but rather, “Do you know Jesus?” Like them, we are people who see the gospel of Jesus as our prime concern,  therefore we are evangelical.

"Free"

Years ago, in Scandinavia, state and church were enmeshed; all citizens were also members of the church. The Free Church started from a belief that the Bible is the proper basis for our faith, not human institutions. “Where stands it written?” became an expression of that; our spiritual freedom and authority come from scripture.
